最近有一位外國朋友電郵問我陸寄居蟹品種, 聯絡之下, 原來她是在一個叫Rota的島進行研究的. 本身牠不是研究陸寄居蟹, 是研究一種鳥. 不過該島也可以看到不同品種的陸寄居蟹, 所以我問問她有沒有橙紅陸寄居蟹的一些生活資料, 和知不知道牠們會進食甚麼食物.
其答覆如下:
''Here, on Rota, I have only seen red ones. I don't know much about the diet of perlatus-- I don't see them as often since they stay close to shore and most of my work is deep in the jungle. At my house (about 500 m from the ocean) many hermit crabs come to eat fruits that fall from the trees and also our compost. They seem to eat almost anything-- fruit, dead leaves, dead animals, etc. I don't know if their color is related to diet. Most individuals I see in the jungle are brevimanus. I have only seen perlatus and rugosus very close to the shore and all of the rugosus I see are very tiny compared to the other species. ''
按她的說法, 和之前看過的資料一樣, 都是說橙紅常出沒於近海邊的地區.
