仍然看到太多飼養者沙面脫皮的圖片(如果是在洞穴內的沙面脫皮還比較好).....忍不住打了篇長文(英文)(其中一張圖片借用了台灣蟹友在討論區貼的圖片, 希望他們會理解, 不理解也沒方法.
Land hermit crabs feel stress during surface molt. Surface molt cannot provide a dark environment.We found that surface molt will affect the quality of new exoskeleton. For long term, it also affects the health of the crabs.1. Molted crabs almost will not eat all the old exoskeleton under this stress circumstances.2. New exoskeleton became dry, thin(weak), not so shinny as original. This may be a kind of shell disease, it will affect the next molt or the crabs may die during the next molt.3. Not enough moisture (not underground), size do not grow a lot after molt.Once again, proper molt mean land hermit crabs will bury underground (deep substrate) for molting.They need times to perpare whole molting process, find a suitable place underground(deep substrate), pre-molt standby, shedding of the exoskeleton, eating old exoskeleton, hardening of the new exoskeleton and revcover. Molt time will be several weeks to several months depend on different size of crabs. Molt time also affected by the temperature, it take longer time during winter. For some jumbo crabs, they even need over 100 days (or over 120 days in winter) for the whole molting process.A proper molt is we will not see the whole molting process, we just let thembury underground and wait for them to resurface after molt.Surface molt is NOT proper molt, it skips all the preparation time that the crabs have to take. It is easy to imagine, originally a crab has to take for example 50 days for molting ,but it just takes only fews days for surface molt. How stressful are the crabs?DO NOT trust land hermit crab seller that surface molt is ok as most of them give a proper enviornment to the crab for molting.
